BEIRUT, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's President Michel Aoun offered on Saturday his condolences for the death of Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said, the National News Agency reported.

Aoun expressed his great sorrow at the death of Sultan Qaboos, saying "he was a friend of Lebanon throughout all the difficult stages that the country has gone through, while supporting Lebanon's rightful causes, stability, security and aspirations of its people."

Oman's Sultan Qaboos died on Friday at the age of 79.

Oman declared a three-day mourning period for Sultan Qaboos who was known for promoting peace in the region.
